Supporting Maryland’s Economy through Safe and Sustainable Transportation

Overview of Curtis Bay Piers

Curtis Bay Piers at the Port of Baltimore is strategically located on the CSX network and the Chesapeake Bay. The terminal is a vital part of America’s freight rail network and Maryland’s economy. As a result of the common carrier obligation, CSX handles coal from the Appalachian region, as well as the Illinois, Colorado and Powder River Basins. CSX has invested more than $60 million in Curtis Bay Piers over the last five years, setting new standards in environmental stewardship and providing improved throughput capacity, efficiency, and flexibility.

CSX is Committed to Safety

Safety is always CSX’s first priority, and every decision we make is intended to transport all freight as safely and efficiently as possible. Curtis Bay is operating safely and CSX is investing to improve the long-term safety and sustainability of the operations.

Everything we do relies on running a safe railroad and workplace – for our employees and the communities in which we operate. In 2022, we spent $1.7 billion on improvements to our core infrastructure. As in all aspects of our business, advanced technologies are playing an increasingly important role and helping us to proactively prevent incidents from occurring.

We are also continuing to work closely with first responders to prepare for unexpected events. In the past year, we have trained nearly 5,000 community first responders in 35 cities on how to safely respond to potential rail emergencies, including those involving hazardous materials.
